Demo reviews
Rock Midgets: "London three-piece, Subterranea, showcases their pensive style with second EP 'Velvet Lies'. Flickering nuances of Grunge and Post-Grunge are frequent and relished in, whilst vocalist Paula dominates Subterranea's sound with her PJ Harvey-esque style. See-sawing between the delicate and sublime, the powerful and commanding, 'Velvet Lies' is a captivating listen which grows on you rapidly, sucking in every sense. Elaborate and multifaceted, somehow the trio bypasses any idea of over-complicated arrogance and simply produces an intriguing and enjoyable EP, loaded with potential. Good stuff. Rating: 4/5"
Neon Promotions: "This female fronted hard rock band sit somewhere between Skunk Anansie and PJ Harvey, and the result is, as one might imagine, well decent. "Overrated" has a strong guitar riff, great vocal, pleasantly mellow bass and massive drum sound - its a smooth, melodic and damn catchy rocker. "Pandora's Box" hits ballad mode, with much lilting and swirling, and allows the vocal to shine. "Oblivious" grunts, stomps and rocks, instruments are taut, with wiry guitar, precise drums and bass, but the vocal flows so sweetly. "Lyrical Kind" is big and solid...just check that vocal...awesome."
Garageband.com: "Vocally this is the best female vocals I have heard on Garageband to date, whoever produced and mixed this knew what they were doing. This song has been added to my play list and I am going to listen to it some more, the song is catchy and in my books is radio ready!"

Neon Promotions January 2007: "Neon favourites Subterranea are next up - as ever the female vocal sits sweetly atop the heavy rock sound provided by the rest of the band. Guitar and bass deliver well thought out licks and lines while drums work intelligently, accenting all the right bits. The songs have catchy tunes, yet they are quite complex when you listen closely, and there's most often quite a groove going on. Some hard edged riffs give a sound reminiscent of RATM, while at other times guitar gives a Cult like edge, brilliant playing making full use of the space in the mix, seemlessly augmenting riffs chords and jangles - pure class. Of course the phenomenal vocal cuts through loud and clear at all times. Excellent."
Neon Promotions Halloween 2006: "Subterranea make a sterling start to this Halloween nite. As ever the note perfect female vocal is a key feature - but the songs are strong too, being very well written with just enough hooks and licks in amongst the punchy rock delivery. The rest of the band are eminently competent, providing a tite heavy groove. There's a hint of Skunk Anansie to the songs but the vocal is very different in style. Sometimes a Pearl Jam like groove is to be found. This is one class rock act."
Neon Promotions June 2006: "Subterranea top tonight's superb bill - and they feature a truly brilliant female lead vocal that has to be one of the best we have ever heard here. With a strong, powerful voice and looks to match this is one foxy lady! But don't let's forget the rest of the band - drums bang away with great power, but provide a nice sprinkling of cymbals and carefully worked hi-hats, driving the band's sound but also decorating it. Bass is highly active, dropping in some nice lines, and guitar whilst never OTT covers both lead and ryhthm roles very well indeed, with a few nice solos about the place. Overall there is a rootsy rock sound to the band, but also a more contemporary side too - this is very classy stuff. The decks are no match for what has gone before."
Neon Promotions August 2005: "Subterranea are next up, and this gutsy, gritty and at times groovy act deliver a convincing hard rock sound. With a good strong female vocal at the forefront of things, the band can be very rhythmical with pounding, tribal drums giving way to more flowing grooves. Guitar weaves in and out, with much riffery and lead lines, but providing a gutsy sound when needed. Bass is deep and purposeful, sticking tightly with the drums. Good gutsy rock."
